A little history...
Whann's Raw Bone Super Phosphate was one of the best-known commercial fertilizers in the United States during the second half of the 19th century. Manufactured by Walton, Whann & Co. of Wilmington, Delaware, the product was marketed as a premium ""raw bone"" superphosphate, made by treating finely ground animal bones with sulfuric acid to create a readily available source of phosphorus for crops. At a time when American agriculture was shifting from traditional farming methods to more scientific practices, phosphate fertilizers like Whann's became increasingly popular because they significantly improved yields of corn, wheat, cotton, tobacco, and other crops. Advertisements from the 1870s and 1880s proudly described the product as ""The Great Fertilizer,"" and emphasized its consistent quality, guaranteed weight, and chemical supervision during manufacture.
Walton, Whann & Co. developed an extensive distribution network, operating from its Wilmington manufacturing plant while maintaining warehouses in Philadelphia and Baltimore to serve farmers throughout the Mid-Atlantic and the South. The company invested heavily in advertising, producing colorful trade cards, catalogs, and newspaper advertisements—like the one shown here—to build confidence in its brand. Whann's fertilizer earned a strong reputation among farmers, with agricultural publications of the era frequently praising its reliability and noting that it had been successfully used for more than a decade. Today, Whann's Raw Bone Super Phosphate is remembered as an important example of the early commercial fertilizer industry, representing the period when advances in agricultural chemistry helped transform American farming into a more productive and scientifically managed enterprise.
