A little history...
In the late nineteenth century, Aitcheson operated a major fuel yard along Alexandria, Virginia’s industrial waterfront, supplying households and businesses with coal, coke, and firewood. Newspaper advertisements from at least 1902 promoted the company’s screened, high-grade coal, while its business office was located at 107 South Royal Street. The yard itself occupied waterfront property near 203–205 South Strand, where rail and river access made it practical to receive, store, and distribute large quantities of fuel. After the destructive Pioneer Mill fire of 1897, Aitcheson rebuilt portions of the operation, incorporating remnants of older warehouses into new two-story buildings constructed between approximately 1902 and 1905. The company became a familiar part of Alexandria’s working waterfront and continued serving the community well into the twentieth century; rail cars still delivered coal to Aitcheson’s yard during its later years. DeWilton Aitcheson died in 1925, but the business survived under subsequent ownership as the Aitcheson Fuel Company before finally closing in 1978—an unusually long life for a firm founded during the coal-heating era.
