A little history...
The Economy Variety Store was a longtime neighborhood retailer located at 2402 West Broad Street in the Hilltop— not a separate town, but the historic West Side neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. City-directory and newspaper records show that the store was operating at that address by at least 1926. Like the familiar “five-and-dime” stores of the period, it offered an inexpensive assortment of household necessities, notions, toys, seasonal merchandise, candy and other everyday goods. Its advertisements promoted the store as a community institution, while the flowing “Economy” logo shown here emphasized its promise of practical merchandise at affordable prices. Columbus Metropolitan Library records place it at 2402 West Broad Street in the 1926 city directory.
The store remained part of Hilltop life for many decades, later becoming closely associated with proprietor Jack Alkire. Former customers remember its old wooden floors, traditional shelving and intimate neighborhood atmosphere—the kind of independently owned shop where residents could purchase small necessities, pay utility bills and obtain American Express money orders. A surviving 1961 advertisement confirms that those additional services were offered at the West Broad Street location, and the Columbus Metropolitan Library holds a photograph of the storefront taken as late as 1994. The Economy Variety Store eventually disappeared as supermarkets, discount chains and suburban shopping centers displaced traditional neighborhood variety stores, but its exceptionally long life made it a fondly remembered Hilltop landmark.
