A little history...
Sturges Bros. began as a modest harness shop in Sioux City, Iowa, when horses supplied much of the power for travel, deliveries, and farm work. Over time, the business grew beyond its original shop into a retail, wholesale, and manufacturing operation. A 1923 history of Sioux City described Sturges Bros. as the city’s oldest firm, suggesting that it had been part of local commerce for many decades by then.
The company’s advertisement, with its two harnessed horses and bold lettering, promoted the trade at the heart of the business. Its address, 411 Pearl Street, also appears in a 1919 Iowa manufacturing directory, which lists Sturges Bros. as a harness maker. The surviving ad offers a glimpse of a time when well-made horse equipment was an everyday necessity—and of a Sioux City shop that grew into an established supplier. The records I found do not establish an exact founding date or when the company closed.
