A little history...
Siegel-Cooper Company was one of the largest and most influential department store chains in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Founded in 1896 by Chicago merchants Henry Siegel and Frank H. Cooper, the company quickly gained national attention with the opening of its massive flagship store at Sixth Avenue and West 18th Street in New York City. Covering nearly an entire city block, the store was promoted as ""The Big Store"" and ""A City in Itself."" One of its most famous marketing slogans was ""Meet Me at the Fountain,"" referring to the grand marble fountain in the center of the store that became a popular meeting place for New Yorkers. The company was known for fixed prices, generous customer service, elegant displays, and innovative merchandising, helping define the modern department store experience.
Despite its early success, Siegel-Cooper encountered financial difficulties in the early 1900s due to rapid expansion, intense competition from rivals such as Macy's and R. H. Macy & Co., and changing retail conditions. The New York store was sold in 1914 and later became home to other retailers, while the Chicago operations continued under different ownership for a time before the Siegel-Cooper name gradually disappeared from the retail landscape. Although the company no longer exists, it remains an important part of American retail history. Its emphasis on customer experience, large-scale merchandising, and memorable advertising left a lasting influence on department store design, and its famous ""Meet Me at the Fountain"" slogan is still remembered as one of the most successful retail marketing campaigns of its era.
