A little history...
The H. Hirschberg Optical Company was a prominent late-nineteenth-century optical business headquartered at 629 Olive Street, at the corner of Seventh and Olive streets, in St. Louis, Missouri. Its founder, H. Hirschberg, promoted himself as an optician and “eye expert” and became known for his “Improved Diamond Spectacles and Eye Glasses,” whose design was patented on July 1, 1879. The company also offered “Diamond Non-Changeable Spectacles,” which were marketed as retaining their optical qualities without requiring frequent replacement. By the early 1890s, Hirschberg’s products were being advertised far beyond St. Louis, with authorized jewelers and merchants serving as local agents in communities across the United States. California Digital Newspaper Collection and Central Michigan University newspaper archive
The company’s traveling representatives—including Hirschberg himself, often advertised as “Professor H. Hirschberg”—visited these authorized dealers to examine customers’ eyes and fit them with spectacles. This combination of a central St. Louis optical house, nationally distributed branded products, local retail agents and temporary fitting clinics gave the company a surprisingly broad reach for its era. Records confirm that it was operating under the formal name H. Hirschberg Optical Co. by at least the early 1890s, and the business was still prominent enough in 1901 to appear in the Nebraska court case H. Hirschberg Optical Co. v. Michaelson. Although little readily available information records when the company ultimately closed, its surviving advertisements, trade cards and invoices preserve the story of an enterprising American eyewear manufacturer that helped transform spectacles from individually made local products into nationally marketed branded merchandise.
