A little history...
Dr. Price’s Cream Baking Powder originated in the 1850s with Dr. Vincent Clarence Price, a physician and pharmacist who developed a baking powder using cream of tartar as its leavening acid. Price later joined businessman Charles R. Steele, and their Chicago-based firm began manufacturing and distributing the product throughout the Midwest. Promoted as a pure and dependable alternative to baking powders containing alum or ammonia, Dr. Price’s became a familiar household brand. The company’s extensive newspaper advertising, recipe books, and colorful trade cards helped make it one of America’s leading baking-powder manufacturers during the late nineteenth century. The Price Baking Powder Company was formally established in 1884 and also produced popular flavoring extracts, including Dr. Price’s vanilla. It was acquired by industrialist William Ziegler and became part of the Royal Baking Powder Company in 1899. Royal continued selling the product under the Dr. Price name, although the original cream-of-tartar formula was replaced with a less expensive phosphate formula in 1919—a change that led to a notable federal false-advertising case. The Dr. Price brand remained popular into the early twentieth century, and its surviving advertisements and containers are now prized reminders of the era when packaged convenience foods were transforming American kitchens.
