A little history...
Richter Bros. was a custom tailoring establishment in downtown Columbus, Ohio, operating during the city’s late-nineteenth-century period of rapid commercial growth. By 1890, the firm occupied the prominent corner storefront of the newly completed Butler Building at the northeast corner of North High and East Gay streets. Its advertisements promoted fashionable fall suits and identified the company simply as “Richter Bros., Tailors,” with uniforms listed as a specialty. This suggests that the shop served not only individual customers seeking made-to-measure clothing, but also organizations requiring coordinated uniforms—a significant part of the tailoring trade before factory-made clothing became dominant.
The ornate advertisement reflects the competitive men’s-clothing market of the 1890s, when independent tailors distinguished themselves through craftsmanship, fashionable imported fabrics and conspicuous newspaper advertising. Richter Bros. remained associated with the High-and-Gay location until at least the early twentieth century. On April 9, 1907, the Butler Building and two adjoining commercial buildings were destroyed in a major fire that caused more than $300,000 in losses. Although the firm may have continued elsewhere for a period, no evidence indicates that it survived as a lasting company or has a modern successor. Today, Richter Bros. is remembered as one of the original merchants in a landmark Columbus commercial building and as an example of the custom-tailoring shops that once lined the city’s principal downtown streets.
