A little history...
R. P. Hall & Company of Nashua, New Hampshire, introduced Hall’s Vegetable Sicilian Hair Renewer by at least 1864. Founded by Reuben P. Hall, the business marketed the preparation as a treatment that could restore gray hair to its youthful color, encourage growth, prevent baldness, cure dandruff, and improve scalp health. Hall promoted it aggressively through newspaper advertisements, colorful trade cards, signs, and memorable “before and after” illustrations like the one shown. The product became one of America’s best-known nineteenth-century patent-medicine hair preparations. Smithsonian National Museum of American History
In 1870, Hall’s business was purchased by the larger patent-medicine manufacturer Dr. J. C. Ayer & Company of Lowell, Massachusetts, which continued selling the Hair Renewer under Hall’s established name. Advertisements remained widespread through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, often claiming that the preparation restored natural hair color and prevented hair loss. Despite the word “vegetable” in its name, historical chemical analyses found that the formula contained lead acetate, an ingredient once commonly used in progressive hair-coloring products but later recognized as hazardous. Today, Hall’s bottles, signs, and advertising cards survive primarily as artifacts of the colorful—and loosely regulated—American patent-medicine industry.
