A little history...
The Texas Bakery of Bryan, Texas, was established in the late nineteenth century by German-born baker Otto Boehme. By 1896, newspaper advertisements were promoting Boehme’s breads, cakes and other baked goods to Bryan residents. The bakery grew into a respected local business, producing fresh bread, graham bread, French rolls, pies, plain and fancy cakes, candies and confections. Historical descriptions praised it as a clean, sanitary establishment and one of Bryan’s leading bakeries.
Following Otto Boehme’s death in 1903, his widow continued operating the business as the Texas Bakery, advertising under the names “Mrs. Otto Boehme” and “Mrs. Otto Boehme & Son.” She maintained the bakery for more than a decade, offering everyday baked goods as well as pies, cakes and pastries for holidays such as Thanksgiving. Newspaper advertisements show that she was still identified as the bakery’s proprietor in 1915. Although the business eventually disappeared, it stands as an example of the small, family-operated bakeries that served Bryan during the city’s early growth.
