Lowell Commercial College was founded in 1859 in Lowell, Massachusetts, at a time when the city's booming textile mills and manufacturing industries created a growing demand for trained bookkeepers, stenographers, accountants, and office professionals. One of the oldest business schools in New England, the college built its reputation by providing practical, career-focused instruction rather than a traditional liberal arts education. Its curriculum emphasized bookkeeping, business law, penmanship, shorthand, and later typewriting—skills that were in high demand by the rapidly expanding business community.
