A little history...
Dr. Sanden's Electric Belt was one of the better-known "electrotherapeutic" devices sold during the late 1890s and early 1900s, a period when electricity was widely viewed as a modern medical breakthrough. The Sanden Electric Company maintained offices in Portland, Oregon, including the Council Building, while marketing the belts throughout the Pacific Northwest and across North America through newspaper advertisements, catalogs, and mail-order sales. Advertisements claimed the belt could restore vitality, strengthen weakened nerves, improve circulation, and relieve a wide range of ailments by allowing the body's natural electrical energy to be replenished. Surviving newspaper advertisements confirm that the product was actively promoted in Oregon by at least 1897 and continued to be advertised into the early 1900s.
Like many electrical health devices of the era, Dr. Sanden's Electric Belt reflected both the excitement surrounding the new science of electricity and the limited medical knowledge available at the time. The belts typically consisted of a leather band fitted with metal electrodes that were either galvanic or battery-powered, depending on the model, and were often marketed especially to men suffering from "nervous debility" or a lack of vigor. Although thousands were sold, modern medical science has found no evidence that these belts provided the broad health benefits claimed in their advertising, and they gradually disappeared as scientific medicine and government regulation of medical advertising advanced during the early twentieth century.
