A little history...
Boss of the Road was one of America's best-known workwear brands during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Introduced by Neustadter Bros., a San Francisco clothing manufacturer founded in 1852, the brand earned a reputation for producing exceptionally durable overalls designed for miners, railroad workers, ranchers, loggers, and other laborers who depended on rugged clothing. The company's distinctive bulldog trademark symbolized toughness and reliability, while the slogan "Boss of the Road" conveyed the idea that its garments were built to outperform the competition. Neustadter Bros. expanded beyond California, establishing offices in New York and Portland as demand for its workwear grew across the United States.
As the American apparel industry consolidated during the twentieth century, Neustadter Bros. eventually disappeared as an independent company. The Boss of the Road brand later became part of Eloesser-Heynemann Co., which was acquired by the H.D. Lee Company in 1946. Over time, Lee phased out the historic brand in favor of its own product lines, bringing an end to one of the pioneering names in American workwear. Although Boss of the Road overalls are no longer manufactured, original garments, advertisements, and labels remain highly sought after by collectors and denim enthusiasts, preserving the legacy of a brand that helped outfit generations of American workers during the nation's industrial expansion.
