A little history...
St. Jacobs Oil was one of America’s best-known nineteenth-century patent medicines. Its story began with August Vogeler, a German immigrant who settled in Baltimore and established A. Vogeler & Company during the mid-1840s. The firm manufactured medicines and chemical preparations, but St. Jacobs Oil became its signature product. Introduced during the latter part of the nineteenth century and promoted as “The Great German Remedy,” the liniment was sold for rheumatism, neuralgia, backache, sprains, bruises, stiffness, and other aches and pains. Under August’s son, Charles A. Vogeler, the business became the Charles A. Vogeler Company and developed a large manufacturing operation at Liberty and German Streets in Baltimore. Charles Vogeler helped make St. Jacobs Oil an international success through remarkably energetic advertising. The company distributed colorful trade cards, calendars, booklets, posters, and newspaper advertisements featuring memorable slogans and illustrations—such as the seated sufferer shown in this design. Its advertising reached audiences far beyond the United States, and surviving bottles and promotional materials have been found in Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and elsewhere. Although its sweeping medicinal claims reflected the loosely regulated patent-medicine industry of its time, St. Jacobs Oil functioned principally as a warming topical liniment. Today, its ornate advertisements are valued as vivid examples of Victorian graphic design and the rise of mass-market consumer advertising.
