Salvation Oil was a popular American patent medicine sold during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Marketed primarily as a topical liniment, it promised quick relief from rheumatism, neuralgia, sprains, bruises, backache, toothache and numerous other sources of pain. Its bold slogan—“Salvation Oil Kills All Pain”—appeared prominently in newspaper advertisements, often accompanied by the affordable price of 25 cents a bottle. Like many proprietary medicines of the period, the brand relied heavily on memorable packaging, oversized typography and sweeping therapeutic claims to attract customers seeking inexpensive remedies without visiting a physician. Patent-medicine manufacturers were among the pioneers of mass-market advertising, using newspapers, posters, trade cards and promotional almanacs to make their products household names.
The advertisement also promotes Dr. Bell’s Cough Syrup, suggesting that the distributor marketed several over-the-counter remedies together. Precise surviving corporate records for the Salvation Oil business are scarce, but the brand appears to have disappeared as American medicine became more closely regulated. The 1906 Pure Food and Drugs Act began restricting misbranded and potentially dangerous remedies, requiring manufacturers to provide more truthful labeling and disclose certain ingredients. Later federal laws imposed stronger standards for demonstrating safety and effectiveness, making the extravagant “cure-all” advertising typical of Salvation Oil increasingly difficult to sustain.
