A little history...
Kafateria Shoe Stores was an American footwear retailer active during the 1920s and early 1930s. Historical directories and newspaper advertisements document Kafateria locations in several western and midwestern cities, including Salem, Oregon; Riverside and San Pedro, California; and St. Joseph, Missouri. The company promoted itself as a bargain-oriented shoe seller, using humorous cartoon advertisements such as “The Kook Sez” campaign. Its stores carried footwear for men, women and children and frequently advertised factory closeouts, receivership purchases and community bargain-day sales. A surviving 1933 advertisement, for example, offered hundreds of discounted pairs acquired following the receivership of the Craddock-Terry Shoe Company.
The Salem Kafateria store operated at 357 State Street from approximately 1926 through 1934 under Harry and Mollie R. Cohen, who had previously operated the Cohen Shoe Company at that location. In August 1935, Mollie Cohen formally retired the Kafateria name and registered the same business as the Style-Arch Shoe Company, which continued there until 1947. Other Kafateria locations also disappeared around this period; the St. Joseph store, documented at 215 South Fifth Street around 1924, was gone by approximately 1930. No evidence indicates that Kafateria survived as a chain beyond the mid-1930s, and it is no longer in business today.
