A little history...
John Kehoe operated a metal-roofing and sheet-metal business in San Francisco during the 1860s and early 1870s, a period of rapid growth following the California Gold Rush. City directories place Kehoe in business on Market Street by at least 1863, and an 1868 directory identifies another tradesman as a metal roofer employed by him, suggesting that Kehoe maintained an established shop rather than working entirely alone. By 1869 he was advertising from 5 First Street, near Market, describing himself as a “Metal Roofer, Tin and Sheet Iron Worker” and promising that roofing would be completed “at low rates, and promptly.” The surviving advertisement’s illustration of a craftsman forming sheet metal reflects the skilled manual work required before prefabricated roofing components became commonplace. 1863 San Francisco directory 1869 newspaper advertisement
Kehoe’s advertisements indicate that the business moved as San Francisco’s commercial district developed. In 1870 he was listed at 814 Market Street, near New Montgomery, and by August 1871 he advertised from 16 Sutter Street, below Montgomery, while continuing to offer the same roofing, tin and sheet-iron services. Such businesses supplied and repaired metal roofs, gutters, flashing, stovepipes and other fabricated building components needed in a densely built city where fire resistance was an important concern. Although little has surfaced about the company after the early 1870s—and it appears to have operated under Kehoe’s personal name rather than as an incorporated concern—the surviving directories and advertisements show that John Kehoe’s shop served San Francisco for at least several years during one of the city’s most important periods of expansion.
