A little history...
The Dr. J. H. McLean Medicine Company was founded by James Henry McLean, a Scottish-born businessman and physician who settled in St. Louis in 1849. After working briefly in the distribution of Mexican Mustang Liniment, McLean introduced his own Dr. McLean’s Volcanic Oil Liniment in 1851 and gradually developed one of the country’s better-known patent-medicine businesses. He later graduated from St. Louis Medical College in 1863. The company’s expanding product line included Strengthening Cordial and Blood Purifier, Tar Wine Lung Balm, Liver and Kidney Balm, and remedies intended for both people and livestock.
McLean promoted his remedies through newspaper advertisements, colorful trade cards, free almanacs, instruction booklets, and other memorable illustrations such as the “Pains in the Back” advertisement. The company developed an extensive distribution system using traveling salesmen, wagons, railroad cars, and ships, allowing its medicines to reach customers throughout the United States and abroad. The business continued operating from St. Louis after McLean’s death in 1886 and was still distributing multilingual advertising and product instructions during the early twentieth century. Like many patent-medicine companies of its era, however, its broad therapeutic claims belonged to a period before modern clinical testing and stricter federal regulation of medicines.
