A little history...
H. T. Schlegel Co. was an early twentieth-century mail-order company based in Peoria, Illinois, best known for advertising "Schlegel's Magic Eye Remedy" in newspapers and magazines across the United States. Around 1909–1913, the company ran extensive national advertising campaigns promising relief from cataracts, granulated eyelids, weak or watery eyes, ulcers, and other eye ailments. The advertisements often featured striking illustrations—such as the famous "Eyes Cured Without the Knife" graphic—and invited readers to mail in a coupon to receive a free trial bottle. As the business grew, its office suite number within Peoria's Home Bank Building changed several times in advertisements, suggesting expansion or relocation within the same building rather than a move to a different address.
Like many patent medicine companies of the era, H. T. Schlegel Co. relied on persuasive testimonials and nationwide mail-order marketing at a time when federal regulation of medical advertising was still developing. Although thousands of newspapers carried its advertisements, relatively little is known today about the company itself, and it appears to have faded from prominence as stricter oversight of medical claims emerged during the 1910s and 1920s. Today, Schlegel's advertisements have become popular with collectors of antique ephemera because of their distinctive typography, unusual illustrations, and their connection to the colorful history of America's patent medicine industry. The surviving ads offer a fascinating glimpse into a period when mail-order remedies and bold newspaper advertising reached millions of American households.
