A little history...
Gately's People's Store was founded in 1887 by Irish immigrant John Gately in Chicago, Illinois, after he recognized the growing demand for affordable merchandise among the city's rapidly expanding working-class neighborhoods. Beginning as a modest dry goods store, Gately's grew into one of Chicago's largest independent department stores, eventually occupying an enormous multi-story flagship building on the South Side. The company sold everything from clothing and shoes to furniture, appliances, toys, and home furnishings, becoming a one-stop shopping destination for generations of families.
By the mid-20th century, Gately's employed hundreds of people and was known for colorful newspaper advertisements like this one, featuring cheerful illustrations and bold promotional messages designed to draw shoppers through its doors.
Like many regional department stores, Gately's found it increasingly difficult to compete with suburban shopping malls, discount retailers, and national chains during the 1960s and 1970s. The flagship store closed in 1977, ending nearly 90 years as one of Chicago's best-known retail institutions. Today, Gately's advertisements, shopping bags, catalogs, and store memorabilia are prized by collectors of retail history, serving as reminders of an era when downtown department stores were more than places to shop—they were community gathering places, complete with holiday displays, fashion shows, and family traditions that lasted for generations.
