A little history...
Ely Brothers was founded in 1868 by brothers Alfred, Charles, and Frederick Ely in Owego, New York, where they operated a retail drugstore and began developing remedies for common respiratory ailments. In the early 1880s, the company introduced Ely's Cream Balm, a topical nasal preparation marketed as a treatment for catarrh, hay fever, and colds in the head. At a time when patent medicines were among America's fastest-growing industries, Ely's Cream Balm gained a reputation as a more reputable alternative by emphasizing that it contained no mercury or other harsh ingredients. The company's extensive newspaper and magazine advertising, including its distinctive illustration of a human head covered with the names of various ailments, made the product one of the most recognizable over-the-counter remedies of the late nineteenth century.
As demand grew nationwide, the business relocated to New York City, where Ely Brothers expanded manufacturing and distribution throughout the United States. Although the founding brothers eventually left the business, the Ely's Cream Balm brand continued under new ownership and was later acquired by larger pharmaceutical interests, allowing the product to remain available well into the twentieth century and beyond. While the original Ely Brothers company no longer exists, its iconic advertising artwork and packaging have become prized examples of early American commercial design. Today, original Ely's Cream Balm tins, bottles, signs, and advertisements are highly sought after by collectors of antique patent medicine memorabilia and offer a fascinating glimpse into the marketing and medical practices of the Victorian and early modern eras.
