A little history...
Doerflinger's Department Store was one of the best-known family-owned retailers in La Crosse, Wisconsin, serving the community for more than a century. The business began in 1881 when William Doerflinger and his partner, Edward Bosshard, opened a small dry goods store known as the Park Store, named for its location near Cameron Park. After purchasing his partner's interest in 1891, William Doerflinger steadily expanded the enterprise into one of western Wisconsin's premier department stores. A devastating fire destroyed the original building in 1903, but Doerflinger responded by constructing a striking new four-story department store at the corner of Fourth and Main Streets. Opened in 1904, the building featured large display windows and modern "Chicago School" architectural styling, quickly becoming one of downtown La Crosse's most recognizable landmarks.
For decades, Doerflinger's was the city's retail centerpiece, offering everything from clothing and furniture to housewares, toys, and a popular tea room. After William Doerflinger's death in 1926, the company remained in family hands under his daughter, Viola Doerflinger Fellows, and later his grandson, Sam Fellows. Like many independent department stores, however, Doerflinger's struggled as shoppers migrated to suburban malls during the 1970s and early 1980s. Although the company opened branch locations and later attempted to refocus on apparel, mounting debt led to bankruptcy in 1983, and the flagship downtown store closed in 1984 after more than 100 years in business. Today, the beautifully restored building remains an important part of La Crosse's historic downtown, standing as a reminder of an era when locally owned department stores served as the heart of American Main Street shopping.
