A little history...
Buckley Shirts was a late-19th-century line of made-to-measure men’s shirts sold by a retailer using the name Lloyd’s. The surviving advertisement itself dates the promotion to 1896, referring to the shirts as “The Buckley Shirts,” “The Peerless Buckley Shirts,” and “The Custom-Made Buckley Shirts.” At a time when factory-produced ready-made clothing was rapidly expanding, made-to-measure shirts occupied an attractive middle ground: customers could obtain clothing fitted to their individual measurements without relying entirely on traditional bespoke tailoring. Custom and made-to-measure clothing remained an important part of the American menswear trade as standardized ready-to-wear sizing became increasingly common.
Buckley Shirts were marketed aggressively on fit, quality, and exclusivity, with the wonderfully confident Victorian-era slogan “THE BEST SHIRTS ON EARTH!” The advertisement announces a sale of made-to-measure shirts and uses the enormous Lloyd’s name to identify the retailer or selling establishment. Unfortunately, surviving readily searchable records for Buckley Shirts and this particular Lloyd’s operation are extremely sparse, so details such as the company's founders, manufacturing location, and exact years of operation cannot presently be established with confidence. What does survive provides a good snapshot of the competitive men's furnishing business of the 1890s, when merchants used elaborate typography, superlative claims, and custom fitting to distinguish higher-quality shirts from the growing supply of inexpensive ready-made garments.
