A little history...
Gillen's Candies was a regional American confectionery company best known for producing boxed chocolates and seasonal candies during the early and mid-twentieth century. Based in Lincoln, Nebraska, the company built its reputation on hand-crafted chocolates, assorted candy boxes, and gift confections that were sold through local retailers and department stores, particularly during holidays such as Christmas, Easter, and Valentine's Day. Like many family-owned candy makers of the era, Gillen's relied on attractive packaging and charming advertising artwork—often featuring children, elegant illustrations, and colorful gift boxes—to distinguish its products in an increasingly competitive confectionery market. Their advertising emphasized quality ingredients and traditional candy-making methods, helping establish the Gillen's name as a trusted regional favorite throughout the Midwest.
As national candy manufacturers such as Hershey, Mars, Whitman's, and Russell Stover expanded during the mid-1900s, many smaller regional confectioners found it increasingly difficult to compete with nationwide distribution and mass production. Gillen's Candies eventually disappeared from the commercial marketplace, although its colorful boxes, advertisements, and promotional artwork remain highly collectible among advertising and confectionery enthusiasts today. An interesting point about the company is that it appears to be unrelated to the modern candy business operating under the Gillen's name in Lincoln, Nebraska. While the present-day business carries on the Gillen family tradition of confectionery in the same city, it is generally regarded as a separate enterprise rather than a direct continuation of the original early twentieth-century Gillen's Candies company whose vintage advertisements and packaging have become prized pieces of Americana.
